16 movies you can rent or stream right now to watch before the Golden Globes

On January 5th, 2020, the 77th Golden Globes will be broadcast across the country. Millions of viewers will tune in to watch who will win, who will lose, and who will own the night with their best attire. But if you plan on throwing or going to a Golden Globe party to bet on who will take home a little golden statue, you may want to stop what you’re doing to catch up on all the movies that got nominated from 2019. Because what else do you have to do from today till Sunday evening?

Luckily, most of the nominated movies can be streamed or rented directly from your streaming services at home, and all you have to do is put on your PJs, plop down on your couch, and watch until you become one with the couch. However, if you’re looking for a more traditional movie-going experience, the majority of movies from this list are still showing in the theaters. Either way, scroll below to see what movies you can watch and where you can binge them from. Happy streaming!

Netflix

1. The Irishman

Do you have three and a half hours to spare this week? The Irishman is Martin Scorsese’s latest (and longest) film, and it’s nothing short of amazing—if you’re into the mafia, crime, and Robert De Niro. Based on the 2004 book, I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, this film follows hitman Frank Sheeran (De Niro) and his family as he recalls his previous life working for the Bufalino crime family.

2. Marriage Story

Noah Baumbach’s latest flick is about family, love, and divorce as he highlights the ebbs and flows of what a family undergoes through a lawful divorce. Not only is the movie nominated for Best Picture in a Drama, Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are both nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Motion Picture. (If you haven’t seen their argument scene, go watch it now).

3. The Two Popes

Why have one pope when you can have two? This movie showcases the tale of Pope Benedict and Pope Francis as they learn how to navigate their opposing point of views for the Catholic Church.

4. Dolemite Is My Name

Eddie Murphy is back and ready to make you laugh with his latest movie role in Dolemite Is My Name. This biological ’70s film follows struggling comedian Rudy Ray Moore (Murphy) as he becomes famous for his alter-ego act, Dolemite. A lot happens in this film, but it’s worth to watch every minute, especially for Murphy’s performance.

Amazon Prime

1. Rocketman

If you’re a huge Elton John fan, then you’re going to love this film. Taron Egerton does a near-perfect portrayal of this infamous singer as the film bounces through pivotal life moments. It’s mystical, sparkly, and downright entertaining. If you’re looking for a film to watch with your old buddies, this is it.

2. Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood

Quentin Tarantino did it again. This time, he went back in time to the 1960s where he not only highlights what Old Hollywood was like, but what went down during the Mason Murders. Just like Inglorious Bastards, this film is semi-biographical, but all Tarantino. Expect violence, comedy, and a little (okay a lot) of blood.

3. Judy

Judy Garland has been portrayed by a lot of actresses, but no one has done it quite as well (and as glamorous) as Renee Zellweger. She sings and dances her way through the last days of Garland’s life and does it with such heart that it’s hard not to be encapsulated by her performance.

4. The Farewell

The Farewell highlights what a Chinese family undergoes when they find out that the grandmother of the family has been diagnosed with cancer. While people from Western cultures would normally informed ill loved ones of their diagnose, families from Eastern cultures keep that information hidden so their loved one can live out their best life. While this film is a tear-jerker, its a much-watch on all levels.

5. Where’d You Go, Bernadette

If you’re familiar with the book, then you’re definitely going to want to watch this film. While the reviews aren’t amazing, Cate Blanchett does a great portrayal of the beloved character, Bernadette Fox.

6. Late Night

Mindy Kaling’s latest project, Late Night is funny, poignant, and straightforward. She provides the stage (pun intended) for Emma Thompson as she plays the first and only host of late night television.

7. Hustlers

Everyone—and we mean everyone—you love is in this film, which depicts the true story of New York strippers scamming men of their money. From JLo, Lizzo, Cardi B, Lili Reinhart, and Keke Palmer, this dramatic and comedic film is one you don’t want to miss.

7. The Lion King

Yes, the graphics are amazing, and the story is very similar to the original animation, but Jon Favreau takes things to a whole other level with his creative direction. Oh, and if you need another reason to watch this Disney classic, Beyoncé is in it, so rent it now before it’s too late.

8. Toy Story 4

The final chapter of the Toy Story Saga is here—and it’s good. Bo Peep is back with her lonesome friends as she finally gets reconnected with Woody, her old and forever love. While this story focuses on finding their new friend, Forky, it’s also a film about friendship, love, and finding your purpose.

Hulu

1. Booksmart

Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut is nothing short of amazing. Two young women, who are about to graduate high school, find out that their whole high school career was nothing what they thought it was. On the last full day of school, they finally decide to take things into their own hands by doing things they were too afraid to do—and boy, the story is hilarious.

2. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

The third film in the franchise is just as good—if not better—than the previous ones. We follow our favorite and new characters on a journey through self-discovery and destiny. It’s a perfect animation film for the family, but we bet your adult friends will like it, too.

3. Missing Link

A stop-motion animated film about a creature legend sounds like it could be lame—but this film is far from it. Missing Link, is all about Mr. Link recruiting his buddies to find his long-lost family. It’s funny, light, and will make your heart swell.
